General English

Four levels of General English are offered, from Beginners to Advanced. The General English program includes both classroom and computer lab components involving CD/DVD multimedia interactive learning.

Who should study General English?

• People who want to develop their overall English skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing in both general and social situations or to improve their employment prospects
• Students who need to improve their English skills for exam preparation and education entry requirements

Study materials
UniTAFE General English courses utilise the Longman Interactive series of course books which are integrated into teacher-guided and self-access activities in our state-of-the-art computer laboratory.

Mode of Tuition
Courses are delivered in English, in both classrooms and computer laboratories. This mode of tuition employs a communicative approach, incorporating:

• Small-group work using written and spoken language in context, using the self-study workbook
• Conversation practice through instructor-guided language laboratory exercises
• Professionally supervised independent writing and listening language practice, using the self-study workbook
• Professionally supervised independent language laboratory study and practice

Entry Requirements
Elementary English Elementary English (General English 1)
This course is the first of a suite of four certificates in English as a Foreign Language. It targets people with a very limited knowledge of English. It is also useful for people who now wish to return to basics and resume their English learning. This course will also assist people who have some fundamental English written skills but few or no speaking skills. Entrants will require an IELTS score of at least 3.5.

Pre-intermediate English (General English 2)
This course is the second of a suite of four certificates in English as a Foreign Language. It targets people who have completed an elementary course in English and have achieved an IELTS score of at least 4.0.

Intermediate English (General English 3)
This course is the third of a suite of four certificates in English as a Foreign Language. It targets people who have completed a pre-intermediate course in English and have achieved an IELTS score of at least 4.5.

Upper-intermediate/Advanced English (General English 4)
This course is the fourth of a suite of four certificates in English as a Foreign Language. It targets people who have completed an intermediate course in English and have achieved an IELTS score of at least 5.0.
